G Codes 2017 Medicare Overview
The CMS Final Rule released in November included new HCPCS codes for behavioral health management services, or behavioral health integration (BHI), a comprehensive assessment of cognitive function for patients with dementia and an add-on code for initiating chronic care management. CMS also eased the burden of reporting CCM. While CodingIntel is happy that CMS is recognizing these important services, we wish they were CPT codes and not HCPCS medical coding.
Some of the G codes in 2017 for Medicare will be replaced in 2018 by CPT codes. When services are defined by CPT codes we can all easily find the rules for them in our CPT books and other AMA resources. In this case, the coding and reimbursement rules are buried in the 1,041 page final rule. I’ve developed a chart that lists the codes, time frame if any, key elements and national non-facility and facility payments. I hope you find it helpful.
